what kind of food should I put in for my tube bird feeder for outdoor hanger- winter time feeding

For winter feeding in a tube feeder, use high-energy seeds like black oil sunflower seeds as the main choice, since they’re rich in fat and easy for most birds to crack; you can also add sunflower hearts/chips to reduce waste, nyjer (thistle) if you want to attract finches, and a quality mixed seed with a high sunflower content. Avoid mixes heavy in fillers like milo or wheat, as birds often discard them in winter when energy needs are high.

Question 2

Is there a way to Grackle proof this feeder? They are light enough that the feeder doesn’t close, and they can’t fit on one perch. Instead they flutter while hanging on and dump out all the seed within a day of filling it. Any suggestions?

Hi Mackenzie. Grackles can certainly be a challenge! Because they are lighter than squirrels, they won't trigger the weight-activated closing mechanism. Since they are resorting to fluttering to shake the seeds out, the most effective way to "grackle-proof" your setup is to temporarily change the type of seed you offer. We highly recommend switching to 100% Safflower seed. Grackles and other blackbirds typically dislike Safflower and will leave it alone, but your Cardinals, Finches, and Chickadees will still happily eat it! Once the grackles realize their preferred food is gone, they usually move on

Do the ports open back automatically for the birds to continue feeding once the squirrel gets off the feeder?

Hi Anna. Yes. Based on this feeder design, the weight-activated outer cover should move back up after the squirrel gets off, allowing the feeding ports to reopen for birds. Please make sure the feeder is clean and dry, as stuck seed, dirt, or moisture may prevent the cover from sliding smoothly.

Can the baffller be lowered? I want  it just high enough for little birds but low enough the pigeons cannot get under it.

Hi Sally. It is fixed to the feeder’s outer sleeve and lowering it could interfere with the weight-activated closing mechanism. For excluding pigeons, a caged feeder designed specifically for small birds may work better.

The squirrels were hanging upside down together at the feeding ports  bypassing the baffle what height should the baffle be

Hi there. If you mean the built-in baffle/cover on this feeder, it is not height-adjustable. If squirrels are hanging upside down from above, we recommend adding a separate dome baffle above the feeder or moving the feeder farther from launch points. Try to keep it: At least 5 ft off the ground At least 8–10 ft away from trees, fences, roofs, or poles squirrels can jump from With any pole-mounted baffle placed about 4–5 ft above the ground, below the feeder If squirrels can reach the feeder from above, they may still bypass the baffle.

Can blue jays and morning doves use this feeder?

This feeder is mainly designed for small to medium birds. Blue jays and Mourning Doves may try to land on it, but they may not be able to feed comfortably because of their size and weight. Their weight may also trigger the closing mechanism, which can block the feeding ports. It is better suited for birds like chickadees, finches, titmice, and similar smaller birds.
