Question 1

Will this keep out gracklesand black birds

Accepted Answer

Hi JP. This feeder's weight-activated mechanism is primarily calibrated to close under the heavy weight of squirrels. While it is not strictly "grackle-proof," the outer metal shroud and smaller perches make it very difficult and uncomfortable for larger birds like grackles and blackbirds to feed, naturally discouraging them over time.

Question 2

Is this feeder sensitive enough to be able to deter "bully birds" such as grackles, from being able to access the bird seed?

Accepted Answer

Hi Liz! The weight-activated closure is factory-set specifically for squirrels. Grackles are lighter than squirrels, so they might not fully trigger the closing mechanism. However, the restrictive all-metal cage design and the specific size of the feeding ports are designed to favor smaller and medium-sized clinging birds, naturally deterring larger bully birds.

Question 3

Does this feeder allow cardinals to feed? I have a flock of grackles that have moved into my yard and they're chasing off my birds. I have a weight sensitive feeder but it was set for medium weight and the grackles are rating out of it anyway. I put it on the light setting and the cardinals couldn't eat. I have one more weight sensitive feeder, not adjustable, but it must be for eagles or something since the grackles can still feed from it. I've hung up shiny, moving things, and they ignore them. I tried safflower in the past to get rid of a flock of doves, which it did, but none of the other birds would eat it either. Birds are nesting here in Texas and they're used to me taking care of them. Any suggestions will be gladly accepted.

Accepted Answer

Hi JP! Yes, absolutely! This feeder is specifically designed to allow beautiful medium-sized birds like Cardinals to feed comfortably. Since you are dealing with a stubborn flock of grackles in Texas, we recommend filling this specific feeder with exclusively Black Oil Sunflower Seeds or giving Safflower seeds another try. The combination of this feeder's restrictive metal cage and seed types that grackles dislike is often the most effective strategy. Hang in there!
